ABOUT ERIKA-ANNE

My photo introduction came when i was a student at university of michigan. having to choose an art class, i chose photography instead of ceramics. i realized i was in the right place the first real night i spent in the darkroom, watching the image magically appear in the tray. after graduating with a history degree, i packed up the uhaul and headed west to california.

I eventually ended up at brooks institute of photography, where i cemented a more serious foundation of this art form.

After photography school, i lived in los angeles and worked in the field of commercial photography. i worked on professional shoots in many realms from fashion and celebrity, to automotive and product. i have worked with celebrities david bowie, stephen curry, tom petty, christian bale, neil young, charlize theron, will ferrell, companies toyota, mercedes, nissan, h&m, target, mattel and athleta, and publications w magazine, women's wear daily, and the hollywood reporter.

I have traveled the world (both on my own and through work) and i have met fascinating people and seen many wondrous things.

Currently living and taking pictures in dallas, texas.

Q& A

Q: What did you have for breakfast this morning?

A: Oatmeal/coffee

Q: What are you currently Listening to on Spotify?

A: Michael Kiwanuka, Leon Bridges, Jack Johnson's Kokua Festival

Q: Tell us about your work, your passion for photography, and what inspires you to continue to create?

A: "Beauty - the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind (dictionary.com)." I strive to capture beauty in my photography and my ever-changing perspective on what is beautiful keeps my passion for photography alive and thriving.

Q: If you could meet and chat with one famous photographer, who would that be and why?

A: One of my favorite professors in photography school once described two different types of photographers "one who captures a moment and one who creates a moment." This is a hard question to answer, as I am drawn to both of these types of photographers and their work. Helmut Newton, Paolo Roversi, Sarah Moon, Frank Oakenfels, Sebastiao Salgado, James Nachtwey have all been inspirational to me throughout the years. From my perspective, to refer back to the previous question, they have all captured beauty, whether through a mastery of light and technique, an eye for the honesty of the human condition or a glimpse into the surreal depths of the human imagination.

Q: What is one goal you have for yourself in the next year?

A: I would like to challenge myself to consistently create new work throughout this year.
